الروابط: Conjunctions:

 

الكلمات التي تربط بين كلمات أخرى أو عبارات أو جمل تسمى (روابط conjunctions) و أشهرها (and, or, but) :

توجد ثلاث أنواع من الروابط:

coordinating conjunctions	تربط بين عبارتين كاملتين مستقلتين
subordinating conjunctions	تربط بين العبارة الثانوية (والتي لا معنى لها بمفردها)  و باقي الجملة الأساسية
correlative conjunctions	تستخدم لربط عناصر متنوعة في الجملة والتي تتشابه مع بعضها البعض قواعدياً.

 

Coordinating Conjunctions

هذه الروابط يمكنها أن تربط بين كلمتين أو عبارتين أو جملتين:

الـ and تربط بين اسمين	I like drinking tea and coffee.	أحب شرب الشاي و القهوة.
الـ and تربط بين فعلين	I like and drink tea.	أحب و أشرب الشاي.
الـ and تربط بين صفتين	This tea is hot and tasty.	هذه الشاي سخنة و لذيذة.
الـ and تربط بين عبارتين	Liking tea and hating it is a matter of taste.	حب الشاي و كرهه أمر يتعلق بالذوق.
الـ and تربط بين جملتين كاملتين	I like drinking tea, and I like drinking coffee.	أحب شرب الشاي و أحب شرب القهوة.

 

تأتي هذه الروابط عادةً بين جملتين مصحوبةً بفاصلة (إلا إذا كانت الجملتين قصيرتين فيمكننا عدم إضافة الفاصلة)، لا يمكنها أن تأتي في بداية الجملة أو في نهايتها:

 

جمل طويلة لذلك يجب وضع فاصلة قبل أداة الربط		All our students have studied very well, and they are ready for the SAT exam.		جميع طلابنا درسوا بشكل جيد و هم مستعدين لامتحان السات.
		All our students have studied very well, but they are still afraid of  the SAT exam.		جميع طلابنا درسوا بشكل جيد ولكنهم لا يزالون يخافون من امتحان السات.
	جمل قصيرة يمكننا أن نحذف الفاصلة و لكن إذا وضعناها فهي صحيحة.		I like tea (,) and I like coffee.	أحب الشاي و أحب القهوة.
			I like tea (,) but I don’t like coffee.	أحب الشاي و لكنني لا أحب القهوة.

 

هذه الروابط سبعة ولكي لا تنساها احفظ الكلمة (FANBOYS) والتي كل حرف فيها يمثل أحد الروابط:

هدموا جميع المنازل و بنو موقفاً للسيارات.	They knocked down all the houses, and they built a car park.	and
حذائي يبدو جميلاً و لكنـني غير مرتاح فيه.	My shoes look great, but they are not very comfortable.	but
هل هم قادمون للبيت اليوم أم أنهم باقون هناك.	Are they coming home today, or they are staying there?	or
لم يستطع أخذ المال من البنك لذلك لم يتمكن من شراء منزل.	He couldn’t get money from the bank, so he couldn’t buy a house.	so
ذلك ليس ما قلته و لا ما عنيته.	That is neither what I said, nor what I meant.	nor
جون يلعب كرة السلة بشكل جيد ولكن لعبته المفضلة هي كرة القدم.	John plays basketball well, yet his favorite sport is football.	yet
ظن جون أنه لديه فرصة كبيرة للحصول على العمل لأن والده كان أحد أعضاء مجلس الأمناء.	John thought he had a good chance to get the job, for his father was on the company's board of trustees.	for

 

Subordinating Conjunctions

هذه الروابط تأتي في مقدمة عبارة ثانوية (جملة غير مكتملة بحد ذاتها و لا معنى لها). و عندما تأتي هذه العبارة الثانوية في بداية الجملة فيجب أن تُتبَع بفاصلة، أما إذا جاءت في نهاية الجملة فلا داعي للفاصلة:

If you study, you will succeed.	إذا درست ستنجح.
You will succeed if you study.
When I came home, they were eating dinner.	عندما أتيت إلى البيت كانوا يتناولون العشاء.
They were eating dinner when I came home.

 

 لها عدة أنواع:

concession conjunctionsالروابط التي تعني : بالرغم من   :
Though it was rainy, we put on our jackets and went for a walk. بالرغم من أنها كانت تمطر، لبسنا معاطفنا و خرجنا في مشوار.	(even) though
Everyone enjoyed the fishing trip although no one caught any fish! استمتع الجميع برحلة الصيد بالرغم من أنه لم يصطد أحد أي سمكة.	although

condition conjunctionsالروابط الشرطية :
If you study hard, you’ll succeed. إذا درست بجد فسوف تنجح.	if
Only if you study hard, you will get high marks. فقط عندما تدرس بجد سوف تحصل على علامات عالية.	only if
Unless you study now, you will fail. مالم تدرس الآن سوف تفشل.	unless
Provided that he pays a fine, he will not have to go to jail. بما أنه دفع الغرامة فسوف لن يدخل السجن.	provided that
Assuming (that) he’s still alive, how old would he be now? إذا افترضنا أنه لا زال حياً فكم سيكون عمره الآن.	assuming that
You will still be cold even if you put on two or three jumpers. سوف تبقى تشعر بالبرد حتى ولو لبست سترتين أو أكثر.	even if
Take your mobile with you in case you miss the bus. خذ هاتفك معك تحسباً ربما لا تلحق بالباص.	in case (that)

comparison conjunctionsروابط المقارنة :
This car is much larger than the one we used to have. هذه السيارة أكبر بكثير من التي كنا نستخدمها.	than
Ali decided to go to the party rather than stay home for the evening. قرر علي أن يذهب إلى الحفلة بدلاً من البقاء في البيت مساءاً.	rather than
I'm going home whether you like it or not. أنا ذاهب إلى البيت سواءً أحببت ذلك أم لأ.	whether
This money is as much as I expected. هذا المال كثير بقدر ما توقعته.	as much as
He loves holidays, whereas his wife prefers to stay at home. هو يحب العطل بينما زوجته تفضل البقاء في البيت.	whereas/while

 

time conjunctionsالروابط الزمنية :
After we had talked on the phone, I wrote down what we had decided. بعد أن تكلمنا على الهاتف كتبت ما كنا قد قررناه.	after
As long as the waves are high enough, we can go surfing. طالما الأمواج عالية بشكل كاف يمكننا الذهاب لركوب الأمواج.	as long as
As soon as Brad graduates, he’s going to start his own business. ما إن يتخرج برات سوف يبدأ شركته الخاصة.	as soon as
Before she left, she gave everyone a present. قبل أن تغادر أعطت كل واحد هديةً.	before
Once I’ve picked Megan up, I’ll call you. ما إن أٌقل (أأخذ) ميغان في السيارة سأتصل بك.	once
He hasn’t eaten any bananas since he was a child. لم يتناول إي موز منذ أن كان طفلاً.	since
I can’t wait until the summer holidays begin. لا أستطيع الانتظار حتى قدوم العطلة الصيفية.	until / till
When I was young,  there were no houses here. عندما كنت شاباً لم تكن توجد هنا منازل.	when
Our dog barks whenever there is someone at the door. ينبح كلبنا كلما كان هناك أحد ما عند الباب.	whenever
Would you like something to eat while/whilst we’re waiting?  هل تريد شيء تأكله بينما ننتظر.	while/whilst
They arrived as we were leaving.  وصلوا بينما كنا ننتظر.	as/while

 

reason conjunctionsالروابط السببية :
I went to bed early as I had a plane to catch at 6 am.  ذهبت للنوم باكراً لأنه لدي طائرة ألتحق بها باكراً.	as
I went to bed early because I had a plane to catch at 6 am. ذهبت للنوم باكراً لأنه لدي طائرة ألتحق بها باكراً.	because
Since I had a plane to catch at 6 am, I went to bed early.  لأنه لدي طائرة ألتحق بها باكراً ذهبت للنوم باكراً.	since
Ahmad has to study hard so that he can succeed. يجب على أحمد أن يدرس بجد ليتمكن من النجاح.	so that
Ahmad has to study hard in order to  succeed. Ahmad has to study hard        to          succeed. يجب على أحمد أن يدرس بجد لكي ينجح.  (بما أنه يأتي بعد to, in order to فعل مباشرةً فهما ليست من الروابط)	in order to to
He asked me why I was angry. سألني لماذا كنت غاضباً.	why

 

manner conjunctionsروابط الحال :
Do you know how to ride a snowboard? هل تعلم كيفية ركوب الأمواج؟ (الجملة سؤال بسبب وجود الـ do في بداية الجملة وليس بسبب how)	how
It looks like as if it's going to snow this afternoon. تبدو و كأنها ستثلج بعد هذا الظهر.	as if

Relative Pronounsالأسماء الموصولة :
I visited Ali who used to be our neighbor. زرت علياً الذي كان في ما مضى جارنا.	who
Whoever you are, I’m not going to allow you to go in. مهما كنت لن أسمح لك بالدخول.	whoever
The man whom you spoke with this morning is on the phone. الرجل الذي تكلمت معه هذا الصباح على الهاتف الآن.	whom
Ask for help from whomever you want. اطلب المساعد ممن تريد.	whomever
The man whose car has been broken down is on the phone. الرجل الذي كانت قد تعطلت سيارته على الهاتف.	whose
She picked up the hairbrush that she had left on the bed. أخذ الفرشاة التي كانت قد تركتها على السرير.	which / that
I don't know what to say. لا أعرف ما أقول.	what
Whatever you say, I don’t believe you. مهما قلت لن أصدقك.	whatever
I like Aleppo, where I was born. أحب حلب حيث ولدت.	where
Wherever you go, I will catch you. أينما ذهبت سأمسك بك.	wherever

 

Correlative Conjunctions :الروابط المتلازمة

هذه الروابط تستخدم على شكل ثنائيات مترافقة و تُظهِر العلاقة بين فكرتين مذكورتين في مكانين مختلفين في الجملة.

The weather this summer is as bad as last year. الجو هذا الصيف سيء بقدر العام الماضي.	as … as
Just as she loves hiking so she enjoys travelling as well. تماماً بقدر ما تحب التنزه، تستمتع بالسفر أيضاً.	just as … so
Both you and I know what really happened.  كلانا نعرف ما حصل بالضبط.	both … and
You can drink chocolate milk either hot in the winter or cold in the summer. يمكنك شرب حليب مع شوكولا إما ساخناً في الشتاء أو بارداً في الصيف.	either … or
Neither Lisa nor Helena has been to Italy before.  لا ليزا ولا هيلينا زاروا إيطاليا من قبل.	neither … nor
If you don’t want to fail your math exam, then you must study hard. إذا لم تكن تريد الرسوب في امتحان الرياضيات فعليك أن تدرس بجد.	if … then
I see you’re in the mood not for dessert but appetizers. أرى بأنك في مزاج (وضع) ليس للحلويات بل للمقبلات.	not … but
Whether you win this race or lose it doesn't matter as long as you do your best. سواء ربحت في هذا السباق أو خسرت لا يهم طالما تبذل جهدك.	whether … or
Not only did my brother break his leg, but he also bruised his ribs. لم يكسر أخي ساقه فقط، بل سحن أضلاعه أيضاً.	not only … but also
